"When I was in college, my senior thesis was a documentary about my mother and her immigration to the United States from Cuba, and because of that film, I learned so much about my mother that I had never known before and wouldn’t have asked. Behind the camera, I was able to ask her questions that I would never ask her to sit down and find out about before.
