![]() Scenerio: Jay Brooks, graphic novel artist and Star Wars fan, breaks up with yet another one of his girlfriends. Not so unusual a tag, but now add to this the twist that Jay, a black male who fits an indie-rock, acoustic melody listening mold, believes his relationships all fail because he keeps dating white women. While superfically The Inevitable Undoing of Jay Brooks comments on interracial dating, a fact highlighted by its initial title I’m Through With White Girls, the film primarily comments on the insanity of the dating scene as a whole, making for a laugh-out-loud and unabashedly feel-good movie experience. Written by television veteran Courtney Lilly (”Invader ZIM”, “Arrested Development,” “Everybody Hates Chris”) the screenplay draws its humor from an innocence of personalities and interactions, the dialogue intelligent and often witty. When Jay (Anthony Montgomery) sets out to find the right new women in a stunt he calls “Operation Brown Sugar” and by happenstance meets upcoming author Catherine Williamson (Lia Johnson), the story utilizes moment after moment of relationship silliness. Jay is at once utterly aggravating and endearing while Catherine reads as eccentric and fun-loving. Director Jennifer Sharp handles every detail of the film with great care, allowing at once for a film that’s purely entertaining and also artsy. At the same time, she avoids the stumble of taking the social commentary too seriously. By letting the ideas live only in the dialogue, she works without a directorial thesis to encumber her filmmaking. Rather, she’s just in the process to tell a compelling romantic-comedy, and that’s exactly what The Inevitable Undoing of Jay Brooks is. For more information visit http://turnsoul.com. Comments (0)
