Why It Is Important to Keep Your Kitchen Extract Duct CleanWhy It Is Important to Keep Your Kitchen Extract Duct Clean

If you own or run a commercial kitchen whether that be in a restaurant, cafe, school, office building, hotel or care home you will need to have your canopy, extraction and duct cleaned regularly. In fact, it is so important that it should be at the top of any fire safety checklist.

kitchen extract duct systems are at an increased fire, odour and hygiene risk over general air ventilation systems if not kept clean. This is because they provide the perfect landing place for grease, cooking oil and other deposits which can then form a coating over time. This coating can then ignite with the application of heat, flame, embers or sparks and a fire can spread rapidly through the entire ventilation system. The result is often widespread damage to the premises as well as loss of life.

Understanding Kitchen Extract Ducts: Importance and Maintenance

As such, the kitchen extract duct should be tested as a fire-resisting system to EN1366-1. This test requires the duct to be insulated with a material that can delay a temperature rise above 180degC on any of the thermocouples placed within the ductwork. We use a solution called Thor Duct, which has been independently tested and verified to this standard and it is our recommendation that all ductwork to be insulated with a product that meets or exceeds this requirement. We would be happy to discuss any requirements you have, and can arrange to carry out a comprehensive survey of your ductwork and recommend the appropriate system.
