Preparing Your Attic for Insulation

If you don’t have any insulation in your spray foam insulation, or if the existing insulation is below the attic floor joists, it’s time to add more. This is an easy project that can save you big on your energy costs. It’s also a good time to look into federal and local rebates, tax credits, low-income assistance programs and other financial incentives for home improvements like adding insulation.

Before you begin, it’s important to clear out your attic of any boxes or other storage items. Insulation shouldn’t be stored on top of anything heavy — it can lose up to half its effectiveness if it gets compressed. Also, avoid putting any electrical or plumbing/hvac boxes in the attic or over soffit vents. This could create a hazard when it comes time to work on those fixtures or do any other maintenance in the attic.

Spray Foam Application Process: Step-by-Step Overview

The easiest type of insulation to install is fiberglass batts. These look a bit like pink cotton candy and cost $0.30-$1.50 per square foot to install. Be sure to wear a dust mask and light weight protective clothing when working with fiberglass insulation as it can be harmful if inhaled. A drywall knife is also required to cut any fiberglass that is hung up on joists.

When using rolled fiberglass, it is best to start in the center of the attic and work outward. This way, you will not be leaving a gap between your first and last rows. Once you have the first layer laid, it’s a good idea to lay a second layer of fiberglass insulation over and perpendicular to the first (this time the unfaced fiberglass will go in first).
